The same special issue of the journal World Archaeology that I was discussing in the previous post has an article looking specifically at the relationship between linguistic and archaeological evidence in the study of the prehistory of North America. It is by M. Powell, two linguists who specialized in the languages of the Pacific Northwest, so while the paper consists in part of a survey of the distribution of language families across the continent and ideas about their prehistory, the discussion of the Northwestern families is more in-depth than the others, and the case study that forms another section is on a specific region on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state.

Since then, however, significant process has been achieved in understanding and correcting the flaws of the original method.

The current paper focuses on drawing attention to some of these corrections, such as a distinguishing between externally and internally trig- gered lexical change, and b factoring out independent semantic innovation.

In this paper, criteria such as shared standard norm, common ethnic identity, and mutual intelligibility are shortly reviewed. Then another method of disentangling languages and dialects based on the number of shared cognates in the word Swadesh list is proposed. The method is tested on various examples. Date: Abstract: This study attempted to trace the phonological and lexical relationships of three languages: Ki-Lungu, Ki-Fipa and Ki-Mambwe spoken in Rukwa region in Tanzania and the northern province of Zambia. Based on the lexicostatistical method, which uses core vocabulary to determine the degree of genetic relationship, and the phonological-change, which identifies phonological innovations for establishing genetic relationship, this study identified three languages under study as phonologically and lexically related.

The data were collected through the use of four informants, two of Ki-Mambwe and the other two of Ki-Fipa. Each participant was given a list of words and was asked to provide the equivalents in a given language. Thereafter, data analysis was conducted in line with the objectives of the study.

The Comparative Method in historical linguistics distinguishes resemblances among languages due to vertical transmission from those due to horizontal transmission, and from resemblances due to non-historical factors like chance. Alternative phylogenetic methods that seek long-range connections among languages have not been shown to consistently detect this distinction. Derived from the Comparative Method are the study of language contact and areal connections, lexicostatistical dating methods and linguistic-paleontological methods for reconstructing cultural knowledge.

Methodological debates in historical linguistics, and application of these methods to cases in the linguistic history of the Southwest, are reviewed, suggesting that, in spite of the paucity of available data for many languages, historical linguistic methods have an important role to play in developing hypotheses about Southwestern prehistory. Keywords: comparative method , language contact , lexicostatistics , linguistic paleontology , phylogenetics.

Lexicostatistics is a method of comparative linguistics that involves comparing the percentage of lexical cognates between languages to determine their relationship. Lexicostatistics is related to the comparative method but does not reconstruct a proto-language. It is to be distinguished from glottochronology , which attempts to use lexicostatistical methods to estimate the length of time since two or more languages diverged from a common earlier proto-language.

Derived from the Comparative Method are the study of language contact and areal connections, lexicostatistical dating methods and linguistic-paleontological.

Don’t have an account? This chapter gives an overview of how historical linguists classify languages into families. While the comparative method and internal reconstruction are preferable when abundant data are available, the limited data on sign languages indicate that lexicostatistics is the most useful method. This method is made reliable by using the Swadesh word list revised appropriately for sign languages.

Languages can have multiple ancestors, that is, languages that have contributed significantly to the daughters thus creolization is included. The history of sign languages must be studied, not assumed, in order to be understood. An examination of families of signs in Southeast Asia and Central America alerts us to the endangered status of indigenous sign languages, often at the hand of ASL. Abstract In a series of seminal articles, Swadesh , and Lees developed the theories of lexicostatistics and glottochronology, and detailed the methods for their application. There followed a spate of enthusiastic studies to test and refine those methods, discussed by Hymes in his lengthy evaluation of the progress of lexicostatistical theory.

At that time, Hymes deemed the glottochronological method a potentially useful tool for the dating of language splits, and called for its further refinement. Yet, since Bergsland and Vogt’s scathing and cogent critique of the method, glottochronology has been neglected. Neither defended nor disproven definitively, glottochronology seems to have died a silent death. Our purpose in this paper is to resurrect it once again, to test the method with data from nine modern dialects of Arabic, to examine the problems involved in its application, and to scrutinize the assumptions which underlie the theory.

Lexicostatistics: Glottochronology. • inspired by radiocarbon dating in archaeology. • Swadesh (): after measuring the ratio of shared basic.

In linguistics , the technique of glottochronology is used to estimate the time of divergence of two related languages. It is analogous to the use of C14 dating for measuring the age of organic materials, in that a “lexical half-life ” is estimated and used to extrapolate to the point in time at which a given two languages diverged from a common proto-language. The method presumes that the basic vocabulary may be used as a sort of clock, on the assumption that basic vocabulary changes at a more-or-less constant rate through time.

The process makes use of the Swadesh list , a list of basic lexical terms compiled by Morris Swadesh. This core vocabulary was designed to encompass concepts common to every human language, eliminating concepts that vary by culture and time. Glottochronology is highly controversial, as many linguists argue that there is no substantial evidence that language change occurs at a steady rate.

For instance, there is evidence that unwritten languages tend to change more rapidly than written ones, and many linguists therefore regard the method as invalid, or at least view glottochronological data with strong scepticism. Lexicostatistics involves measuring the percentage of cognates words that have a common origin in “basic word lists”. The larger the percentage of cognates, the more recently the two languages being compared are presumed to have separated. Categories : Historical linguistics.
